Tier Technology Management SoftwareTier management is something very simple. All of us know what a tier is – it is a series of things placed one on top of the other. There is a tier structure in any organizational hierarchy and tier management works as per the structure of this tier. The major issue that the IT administrator in any company faces today is bandwidth management. There is no business today that can function efficiently without having the Internet in place. Business today is done globally and the Internet offers an easy, reliable and cost saving option to connect with anyone in any part of the globe. So, the employees today always have access to the Internet. But the IT administrator needs to ensure that they are not using the Internet for something other than work. Typically, the server is the gateway between the internal network of an office and the Internet. Internal communication requests are sent to the server and then it connects with the Internet to process these requests. But the server can also get choked when there are too many requests at the same time. If there are requests for processing websites that have nothing to do with normal business then normal business may get hampered because the important websites may take ages to open. IT administrators manage bandwidth through tier management. Tier management and company structureA company structure is like a pyramid. The CEO sits right at the top and the VPs report to him. AVPs further report to the VPs and so on. As the hierarchy keep going down the number of people in a particular tier keeps increasing. While the CEO and the top management team have unrestricted access to the Internet, it is not possible to replicate this model down the pyramid. If everyone can open every website then it is going to create havoc in the server. IT administrators put in stops at various levels of the hierarchy and restrict the usage of the Internet. This is what tier management is all about. But for most companies today, tier management is not something they need to worry about. If you look at most businesses, their IT infrastructure is managed by a vendor. A bank specializes in banking and they cannot afford to use their resources to manage their IT infra. Hence, they have a software vendor in place that manages this part. The bank goes about doing its normal job while the IT vendor does the tier management. For the most effective tier management you need an expert – either in the form of an employee or a third party vendor. As long as your server is free of choking and normal business can resume you don’t need to worry about your IT infra. |
